Tips for Writing Your Best Man Speech
Chances are, if you've been chosen as a best man, you know the groom pretty well. And maybe by now you're aware that everyone is expecting you to give a best man speech - a toast - at the wedding reception. If you need help preparing this speech, here are a few tips to bear in mind.
*Plan it! Don't make it up on the fly. Even if you're quick-witted (of course you are!), even the most glib person's mind can go completely blank without warning.
At least jot down a few points or key phrases if you don't want to write it out word-for-word ahead of time.
*Humor is good, but don't forget to be serious. Sure those are conflicting elements, but it's important to remember. Without a little humor, you risk boring the guests.
Even so, it's vital to remember that your best man speech should be a respectful tribute to the couple's new life together. You can be sure that the two of them take their marriage very seriously, and they want to know that you honor that. While sarcasm might be fun in the right situations, it is very dangerous territory and should NEVER be used in a wedding speech.
*Be concise. Don't go rambling on, please. Practice at least once in front of one other person!if their eyes start to glaze over, find something to cut!
*Watch the anecdotes. Steer clear of stories about your friend's old girlfriends, and don't go telling the guests about embarrassing moments that could make your friend's new wife want to clobber you. And trust me, if his wife doesn't like you, you won't be seeing much of your buddy after the wedding.
*Share something you like - something appropriate! - about the bride. Remember the part about wanting to endear yourself to her?
*Last but not least, be sincere. There's a reason why you were chosen to be the best man. Keep that in mind and share in the joy of your friend's happiness. Then, your best man speech will be remembered fondly.
