Improving Medical Treatment Through The Placebo Effect

by John Bell

Before each and every medication produced by pharmaceutical companies can be offered for sale it has to be thoroughly tested for effectiveness and quality.

Measuring effectiveness of a drug against 'placebo' is a popular method. The term 'placebo' refers to a tablet or something similar that contains no active medicinal substance.

You do not need to travel to Mars to know it exists! And you do not need to be a top scientist to appreciate that the placebo effect is very real and extremely effective.

It has long been recognised in the pharmaceutical industry that if a patient truly believes that a pharmacologically inactive substance has an ability to cure, then, amazingly, it can, and often does.

Research has shown that the power of the human mind has the ability to make people better. French pharmacist Emile Coue was able to demonstrate, as far back as the 1920s, that if a patient believed they were going to get better they often did.

The mind can control our body. If a patient is prescribed a 'placebo' he or she is not normally told this, and often the mind is so convinced improvement in health will follow - it actually does!

We have faith in the medicine, for we don't know that it is inert. Our recovery therefore comes from within, and it is the power of the subconscious that heals us. The purveyors of so called quack medicines relied on this to succeed in selling their products, which were often little more than coloured sugar water.

Pharmaceutical companies have products with proven benefits. The years of research and development and the in-depth trials are testament to that.

Empower medical practitioners with an understanding of how to engage the power of placebo within the mind of a patient and the effectiveness of the medication will be enhanced.

The subconscious part of the brain is like a sponge. It absorbs information uncritically. The subconscious brain can be controlled!

Our conscious brain acts as a gate keeper. When we have vivid dreams our conscious mind is off duty and we are flooded with the apparent chaos of the contents of the subconscious.

If we can find ways to convince the subconscious that certain things are true we will have found a route that opens up enormous possibilities including enhancing the effectiveness of medication.

I have now collated best practice from healthcare professionals and pharmacists over a 15 year period. During that time I have discovered that by learning the mechanics of thought in relation to patient behaviour, healthcare professionals can tap into an enormous, often dormant power they did not realise they possessed.

Provide doctors, nurses and pharmacists with a short presentation on the power of placebo and the ways it can be used in medicine, and you will be empowering them with one of the most powerful, acknowledged, yet least understood weapons available in their fight against illness and disease.

Voted 'Best UK Conference Speaker of the Year' on four occasions, medical and pharmaceutical meeting speaker John Bell guarantees to motivate and inspire healthcare professionals with his unique, educational and entertaining speeches.
