Fireplace Mantels: What To Know Before You Buy

by Wyatt Fisk

Fireplace mantels are essential in decorating a fireplace. When buying a mantel, you have to bear in mind that it will define the personality of the room it's used in. The type of mantel you buy could ruin the rest of the room if it doesn't match. Fortunately, mantel choices are abundant. You should have no trouble finding a mantel that matches your whatever budget, style and size.

Fireplace mantels are composed of wood, stone or metal. Of the three, wooden mantels are cheapest. Also, they are easily carved to be made very decorative and attractive. Stone mantels are stronger and more useful. Metal are perhaps the most cost effective. They can best perform the actual function of reserving heat in the fireplace with the least size. However, metal mantels are usually too diminutive, so in many cases a stone or wooden facade is put over them.

When buying a fireplace mantel shelf, it's preferable to get one made of stone. They can handle more weight compared to other materials. However, wood and metal do have their merits. Wood can be more decorative, as long as you do not stick to using light items. Metal is better at shielding the fireplace, but is the least useful as a shelf. This is because metal has a tendency to heat up.

Decorative electric fireplaces are completely fabricated, including a built-in mantel. All that's needed for them to function is a plug-in socket. It's never going to be as good as an actual fireplace, but it's mobile and multifaceted. You can use and reuse them almost anywhere, in both the house and office. There are even variations that can be wall-mounted, and others that double as TV stands.

For the more commonplace fireplace mantels, you need to plan out some specific data. Mostly, you have to decide what mantel best matches your actual needs. Verify the room's technical dimensions, and then the dimensions of the fireplace and area surrounding it, and the room's overall mood.

And then, you need to go about installing that mantel. This can be a daunting but not impossible task. Manufacturers also sell fireplace mantel kits, commonly built from wooden pieces, to make the assembly and installation process easier. In most cases, have your fireplace mantels assembled by a professional. Get a professional if you bought stone mantels, and metal antique mantels or reproductions. Remember all these considerations when shopping for a mantel.

Fireplace mantels are a necessity in a room with a fireplace. When looking for a mantel, try to remember you have to get one that matches its surroundings. When looking for a fireplace mantel shelf, it's best to get a stone mantel. Decorative electric fireplaces include the mantel in its design. It won't be able to replace an honest-to-goodness fireplace, but it's far more adaptable.
